BASIC OF A WEB PAGE AND WEB SITE DESIGN

A Web site should contain information about the business for which it is being designed. The information can be in the form of text, graphics, photos and multimedia but is not always necessary. The basic guideline to be followed while designing a site is the simplicity of the presentation. The layout of the web site should be such that information can be quickly and easily accessed. We shall now discuss some of the guidelines that are required to be kept in mind while designing a web page.

GUIDELINES FOR MAKING A WEB SITE

They say, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’’. This means that every individual has his or her own opinion on beauty. So is the case with web pages also. Most reader may not not know a thing For example, you may know nothing about photography - - angels, lighting, filters, and so on, but you know a good photograph when you see one.

While there is no perfect page layout that well appeal to all readers, there are a few guidelines that if followed while designing web pages and web sites give rise to standard sites. As a developer, you have three roles to play:
Ø      Architect
The site must be well structure, so that the navigation from one section to another follows a logical path.
Ø        Librarian
You have to ensure that the contents are catalogued in such a manner that the user
faces no difficulty in locating information or resources on your web site.

THE DESIGN PHASE

During this phase the developer should learn about the:
Goals and objectives
identify your target audience. Before designing the web site you have to learn the type of users who will be visiting your site, their interests, their tastes, and why they`re visiting your site. Missing out the target audience will result in designing a web site with no one visiting your site.

Web site will differ depending on the target audience. For example, corporate site have sophisticated looks and the sites related to children are usually colorful with jazzy graphics added to the site.

Story boarding
Prepare a storyboard (description of the layout, contents, sequence, operation) of your web site to define the conceptual design of the web site. Remember that the web site is successful only if number of links are provided not expecting the user to read  as a novel. The visitor will be interested in jumping to a point of his interest and not reading it linearly.
